It’s finally over and what an end it was
With the conclusion of play on Week 16, that spells the end for the regular season of TBO. Lots of make ups and matched cards were had over the last few days and boy did they have an impact on things. Let’s briefly recall what the standings looked like heading into the final week of regular season play. Given where the standings were, there were only 5 teams with a shot at playoffs.
There was a huge matchup between the team of DJ-Merritt-Dan-Prucha vs. Donahue-Mooney-Hawk-Haberern. That match was very one-sided and DJ’s team took 8 of the 10 potential points. They also performed well in their make-up matches. While Connor-Bill John-Mott-Fig team did not perform well in Week 16, they did do well in their make-ups to bring them up. With that, three teams comfortably made playoffs:
#1 seed - Connor Brown, Bill John, Sean Mott, Brian Thayer
#2 seed - Pat Donahue, John Mooney, Craig Hawkinson, Andrew Haberern
#3 Seed - DJ Mahar, Merritt Daniels, Dan Mahar, Drew Prucha
That leaves us with the #4 seed….who’s the last team to make playoffs? As seen in the above, the team of Dickie-Jon-His Holiness-Morgan were on 76 points and the team of Fanto-Steve-Mike Burns-Kirkby were on 68 points (8 points behind the leaders). In addition to Week 16 play, Dickie’s team had 5 make-ups to 4 make-ups for Fanto’s team.
Buckle up people, this is about to get very in-depth…All of these matches we’re about to go through have happened in the last 2-3 days. We’ll also illustrate the gap between the two teams as each match is completed
Week 2 - Jon C loses to Connor Brown. Jon was -3 vs. quota while Connor was +3. Prior to the match, Jon’s team held the team point by a net score of 0 vs. -4. With the quota performance factored in from this match, that leaves the team point standings at -3 (from 0) to -1 (from -4). That switch of the team point takes away two points from Jon’s team and gives it to Connors team
Dickie’s Team now at 74
Fanto’s team at 68
Differential: +6
Week 3 - Steve Donegan beats Merritt Daniels +1 to -2, taking two match points. No impact to team point
Dickie’s Team: 74
Fanto’s Team: 70
Differential: +4
Week 4 - Paul Daniels loses to Devin Carrigan, no impact to team point
Dickie’s Team: 74
Fanto’s Team: 70
Differential: +4
Week 5 - Bill Kirkby beats Bob Moran +1 vs. -3 and gains his team two match points. Prior to the match, Bill’s team was losing the team point by a score of -7 to -4. By winning his match by four points, Bill flipped the team points back to his team by having the net scores for his team of -6 (from -7) vs -7 (from -4). That represents another gain of two points for his team
Dickie’s Team: 74
Fanto’s Team: 74
Differential: 0
Week 6 - Jon Carroll loses make up to Dan Mahar by a score of 0 vs. +2. Prior to the match, the team point was awarded to Jon’s team by a score of -2 to -4. By losing to Dan by 2 quota points, that split the team point at -2 vs -2. That represents a loss of one team point by moving from winning the team point to splitting the team point
Dickie’s Team: 73
Fanto’s Team: 74
Differential: -1
Week 13 - While made up on 7/31, the match of Jon Carroll vs. Marty had recorded the players scores for quota calculation purposes, but the match points were not awarded. The team points were also well in hand for Jon’s team, therefore no team point movement
Dickie’s Team: 75
Fanto’s Team: 74
Differential: +1
Week 14 - Jon Carroll loses make-up to Bill Jon -3 to +2. Team point was well in hand for Bill’s team, so no team point movement
Dickie’s Team: 75
Fanto’s Team: 74
Differential: +1
Week 15 - Paul Daniels loses make-up to Bob Zaleski (0 vs. +4) with no impact to team points. Rick Fanto also loses make-up to John Mooney (-1 vs. 0) with no impact to team points.
Dickie’s Team: 75
Fanto’s Team: 74
Differential: +1
Week 16 - Team of Fanto-Steve-Mike Burns-Kirkby take 8 of the total 10 points, while Dickie-Jon-Paul Daniels-Morgan take 6 of the total 10 points.
Dickie’s Team: 81
Fanto’s Team: 82
Differential: -1
With the above results, the team of Fanto-Steve-Burns-Kirkby take the #4 seed for playoffs.
I want people to step back and think about the above for a few minutes. In the above, despite the matches being not particularly close, the team points results absolutely matter. Giving someone a putt to avoid a double par, giving someone a bogey putt because you are blowing them out…these things matter. Giving someone those putts could impact the team point and those team points could be reason why a team does or does not make playoffs. As the IT Nerd always says: “If there’s a point on the line, make them putt it!”
